Paintings

I paint in watercolours, acrylics and oils, and I also include pastels as a painterly medium. The paintings shown below are relatively small in scale, with most being A3 size (unframed). My favourite subjects are landscapes and natural forms with an interest in narrative, atmosphere, and the fall of light. Some pieces evolve over many hours or days of contact with the subject, while others are more direct and spontaneous responses, often painted in a single sitting out of doors. I enjoy working both in a closely focused and detailed way, and also in a more expressive painterly way, exploring masses of colour. My formal training in Fine art taught the importance of observational drawing and composition. I prefer to work from direct observation for the contact and clarity of colour and experience.
