Elizabeth Emery Beattie
BA (Hons) Fine art. PGCE. MA. PhD (Art History)
Thank you for visiting my online gallery.
I am a painter, art historian and calligrapher. Drawing in all its forms has always been a passion for me. I enjoy working in a wide variety of media, including acrylics, pastels, watercolour, oils and calligraphic media on a range of surface textures. I was born in Northern Ireland, from where my Emery family background in printing has influenced my interest in calligraphy and letterform design. The landscape of Ireland continues to inspire my imagination while drawing and painting from observation there on regular visits.
My formal training in Fine art at Cheltenham College of Art was followed by a postgraduate Art education course at Cardiff University leading to a long and fulfilling teaching career, which has run parallel with my exhibiting experience since 1982. I was later awarded a PhD in History of Art in 2004 (UCE Birmingham) after a decade of part-time study and travel researching Renaissance Marian iconography. Research interests continue in calligraphic design, French and Spanish painting and interior design.
My art work has appeared in both television and video art educational productions. I have enjoyed commissioned work and design experiences, exhibiting in group and solo exhibitions, and especially the opportunity to teach in many different venues. These have included the RSC Production workshop, NEC Birmingham and major art galleries with school visits, including the National Gallery, London and the Louvre and Musee d’Orsay in Paris.
I currently work as a freelance artist and independent tutor with adult groups based in Worcester.
